Lung Cancer & Thoracic Surgery Rehab – Home Physiotherapy Package

Pre-surgery or post-surgery rehab after lung resection, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, wedge resection, esophagectomy, or other thoracic surgeries
- Home-based onco-physiotherapy tailored to your surgery and lung condition
- Focus on lung function, chest mobility, endurance, and independence
- Aims to reduce complications, improve breathing, and enhance quality of life
Post-Operative Package (6-Week Program)
Frequency: 3–4 sessions per week
Overall Goals
- Prevent post-op pulmonary complications
- Improve lung function and chest wall mobility
- Restore aerobic capacity and functional independence
- Build endurance and peripheral muscle strength
- Reduce fatigue and improve quality of life
Week 1 – Lung Expansion, Airway Clearance & Mobility
- Pain relief strategies
- DVT prevention exercises
- Breathing retraining
- Chest clearance techniques
- Dyspnea-relieving positions
- Gentle mobility: bed-to-chair transfers, short walking bouts
- Energy conservation and pacing education
Week 2 – Gentle Conditioning, Restore Posture & Function
- Low-intensity aerobic exercise
- Postural correction
- Functional activity retraining
- Gentle thoracic mobility exercises to reduce stiffness
- Continued breathing exercises to improve ventilation
Week 3 – Improving Lung Capacity and Endurance
- Progressive walking program or stationary cycling
- Inspiratory hold techniques to expand alveoli
- Thoracic expansion with active stretching
- Peripheral muscle strengthening to assist daily activities
Week 4 – Strengthening & Inspiratory Muscle Training
- Progressive resistance training
- Inspiratory muscle strengthening
- Functional mobility drills
- Continued aerobic progression
Week 5–6 – Advanced Conditioning & Independence
- Higher-intensity aerobic training (based on tolerance)
- Endurance challenges
- Complex functional activities (household chores, outdoor walking)
- Finalize an independent home exercise program
- Education on long-term pulmonary health and relapse prevention
Supplementary Care Options
- For patients with drains/stomas: movement precautions, safe dressing changes, breathing positions
- For patients on chemotherapy/radiation: fatigue management, gentle pacing strategies
- For patients with persistent breathlessness: pursed-lip breathing, relaxation and body positioning
- Scar management and chest wall desensitization (once healed)
